What is SEUCK?
SEUCK = Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit

SEUCK is an acronym for the "Shoot Em Up Construction Kit". SEUCK is an old commercial C64 utility that allows you to create and generate your very own shoot 'em ups or other game ideas with the aid of various sub menus pre-built into the program itself. I first had SEUCK in 1990 with my first ever Commodore 64 computer and loved using it since. SEUCK was an all-in-one tool ideal for designing and creating your very own vertical scrolling shoot 'em ups, without requiring any knowledge of code.

Constructing your game can be done by using a set of menus. sprites, objects, background graphics, sound effects (music requires additional custom code), attack waves, player limitations, level settings, play test. SEUCK even has its own disk or tape mastering system. The tape version had its own auto boot tape with built in SEUCK fast loader tape system. Out of many games creation editors, SEUCK is by far the most easiest games creator for the Commodore 64. It is also a whole lot of fun too.

Although you can make fun games with SEUCK. The editor also has its own limitations about what you can or can't do to build your own game. Common pitfalls, are the game engine is very limited or restricted with the number of units available for attack patterns. On the plus side, it is possible to implement clever tricks using the attack waves. For example a boss sprite is formed of linked enemies and will not explode as a whole set after 15 shots. The down side it it is that you will have to kill a boss by shooting each sprite separately. There's also the waiting time for a level to complete after shooting a boss clean. As well as basic game play, SEUCK can also churn out some quality games productions that really outsmart the SEUCK engine even without programming. Below you can see the result of one of my games created using SEUCK.

There is also the Sideways Scrolling SEUCK Left by Jon Wells. A superb horizontal scrolling version of the original Shoot Em Up Construction Kit which ironically scrolls from the left of the screen. The sideways scrolling version was made back in 2008. The first full game that was made using this version of SEUCK was my game, Imaginator.

In 2024 Martin Piper modified the Sideways SEUCK Left engine to scroll the correct direction from the right of the screen. Only one full game got developed with Martin's version of the utility. That was of course "River Barrage" by Alf Yngve and TND Games, but hopefully there should be some more in the near/distant future.

This compo is not able to provide the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit or any of the Sideways Scrolling SEUCK engines, it will be up to you to find the utility.

What about the SEUCK Compo?

The C64 SEUCK Compo was first launched by Akira, at shmups.com, but eventually passed the gauntlet to TND to host the compo. Since 2009, the C64 SEUCK Compo has been quite successful and it has been continuing (with breaks between) through to 2021, with a three year break afterwards. Now with me coming out of retirement from hosting the competition, it is back by popular demand.

Finally the history of the compo is over. Now let's get to the fun part ... Aim + Categories.

The aim of the C64 SEUCK Compo 2025 is to develop a fully playable game, with aid of using the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit, Sideways Scrolling SEUCK Left, or Sideways Scrolling SEUCK Right. The objective is to make any kind of game genre that you think might stand out in front of the crowd. Your game should have at least one pickup object or have 10,000 points for extra lives enabled. This feature can be reserved for specific in game enhancements such as power ups.

Anyway here is what is what is recommended from your compo entries (although it is not compulsory):

Presentation and design (optional)

Front end presentation should have at least a logo, rather than a full page with just plain text - I'm not saying it has to be that way, but that is what is preferred. SEUCK's front end can be very restrictive for designing and creating your very own front end. To create a logo, you can use the character editor in the title screen editor to create chars that form a logo. The easiest way would be to use characters that you don't need (using the Edit Character Set option in the EDIT FRONT END menu. Then manually construct the logo in the front end editor. You might want to use the Action Replay M/C monitor to change the rolling bar colours if there are colours that you don't want. You may use SEUCK School enhancement Action Replay tips to change colours if you want to, but that is entirely up to you.

There are two good examples for logos below: Tau Zero by Alf Yngve, and Cycotics by Carl Mason.

You are also welcome to use additional tools such as my SEUCK Title Screen Maker and make something presentable like a couple of my examples below:

but that is only if you wish to use those.

Good quality game design and originality

Game content should stand out well. There should be nice graphics, and the sprites should be clear to see when playing your game. Graphics should have some time spent on them. Rendering PC made graphics/models of your own, then converting those to C64 is one good option. Exploring other background and sprite graphics can be quite helpful as well. Re-Alienator uses a clever example of creating an Operation Wolf style game with a difference. It's highly playable and good fun and makes a good Aliens themed game. Adventures of Alain is a good example that SEUCK is not just made for making shoot 'em ups. You can also make interesting comedy movie-style games. There are plenty of other games spread around on previous compos or on the TND contributor's page that may give you some ideas.

We like good shoot 'em ups

We do love space blasters, but most space blasters that have been entered in the C64 SEUCK Compo don't seem to do very well with the audience. It is always great to blend in some cool enemy attack waves. Synergy by Alan Simek had some lovely graphics, and smooth animations. The Last Hope by Sea Software featured some Gradius style alien patterns which stands out pretty well in a well polished shoot 'em up.

Enhancements and are welcome but not essential

The C64 SEUCK Compo 2025 is not only open to SEUCK game developers who cannot code, but also it is open to programmers who like to enhance their own or friends SEUCK creations. You are welcome to add some enhancements from the SEUCK School tips (or some of your own ideas) into your games, use the KickAssembler, SEUCK Redux framework or do whatever you like to the game to make it stand out. However, you must prove that the game was made in SEUCK. This can be done by sending the SEUCK All Data file or raw version of the game along with the enhanced version.

Ray Fish DX used SEUCK Redux as a little collaboration project outside the SEUCK Compo.

In the last compo, the winner was Alf Yngve with Droid Rumble

The winner's game will get full enhancements as a prize and will be passed to them first before the traditional compo prize pack has been launched on D64 on the TND SEUCK Compo 2025 page before appearing in the SEUCK Prize Package which will be free to download from TND.

Depending on the type of game's compatibility, The prize version of the game will be tested on SEUCK Redux (If suitable) and showed to the winner - if suitable the platform will be used. Otherwise the prize will be on standard SEUCK engine with additional enhancements hand coded by TND. Either way this will include:

- Front end presentation with author's credits and music
- Additional in game enhancements where necessary, inlcuding in power ups based on pickup or every 10,000 points scored
- Possibility of a hi score table for 1 or 2 players (depending on the game type)
- A full digital tape master complete with loading picture by an active C64 graphican
The prize version of game will be respectably submitted to the game author before release with the SEUCK compo prize package.

Like every SEUCK compo, the two runner ups could end up with just a new front end with music.

The Prize Package is here, and there is also a bonus treat. Check it out
Click the disk icon to download the prize package

All prize versions (and bonus game) are compatible with PAL and will not work on NTSC.
If you are using theC64 or Ultimate 64 (or U64 elite, etc.) Please set  or configure video mode to  PAL

D64 version: Split into 4 1541 disk images. All 4 sides feature a separate disk menu. For SD2IEC compatibility, and runnable with Action Replay or other cartridge fastloader, no software fastloader has been included in the menu.

TAP version: All compo prize winners have been mastered with loading bitmap and music, using Tape Master Pro V5.0, or TapeTool V1.0.0.7
All compo entrants submitted to the SEUCK Compo have been mastered using GyroSpeedWIN by Statmat (Original tape turbo by G.Saunders)

The SEUCK Compo 2025 prize package has now been released and features all of the entries that were submitted to the competition. Also included in the prize pack are three enhanced versions of this compo's winner and two runner up games. These all feature new front ends, some possible in game enhancements and some incredible loading artwork with special thanks to Carl (Mase) Mason. The winners enhanced games are first in the list in both D64 (Split into 4 disk sides with a menu on each side) and TAP versions of the prize pack. Here's a preview of what the new versions of each game now looks like.

Star Skimmer - 1st place prize

Star Skimmer is the first place winner. This game was mastered in SEUCK Redux and features major in game enhancements, which include smart aiming aliens, background parallax scrolling, a new score panel, level colour changing features, new music and also the music changes in between in game boss stages. The game also features a cool front end with in game sound options and a full high score table in which you can sign your name to. Star Skimmer also features a very nice loading bitmap which was drawn by Carl Mason. This is absolutely wonderful stuff for a stunningly traditional  vertical scrolling shoot 'em up that has won the C64 SEUCK Compo 2025. A much deserved prize.

Captain Ishtar Begins - 2nd place prize

The second place runner up, Captain Ishtar features only a few enhancements. First of all we have another stunning loading bitmap by Carl Mason. There is also a stunning new front end, which features a revamp of one of Alf Yngve's old logos. There is also a text fading routine which fades out the pages for the credits and information. There is also a zoomed scrolling text message, which is very colour and carries the last score of the player and high score. Also the front end contains a nice red sideborder .The game does not really feature any new fin game features compared to the entry that was submitted into the competition. However, as a bonus treat, the game features a new score panel at the bottom border. A lot of hard work and effort has been put into Captain Ishtar Begins by Alf Yngve and Magnovinna, and this overall result deserves this second place prize.

Thunder Bird - 3rd place prize

The final enhancement prize goes to the third place runner up, Thunderbird. A stunning sideways SEUCK game that scrolls to the left instead of scrolls to the right. Eleanor did all of the in game enhancements including the platform mechanics. There are some amazing background animations and effects. This arcade platform  shoot 'em up features a stunning loading bitmap made by Carl Mason. Also there is a cool title screen with a Western style composition and a gold colour washing text. Carl's logo also gets re-used in the front end. Well done to Eleanor for reaching third place with this game. The overall production is wonderful.

... but wait, what about the bonus release?

Hyper Hive

Game design: Richard/TND
Logo Graphics: Freeze/Blazon
Loading bitmap: Freeze and Chesser/Blazon
Additional code: Martin Piper and Richard/TND
Music: Richard/TND
Tape loader and SEUCK Redux Framework: Martin Piper
SEUCK Version: The Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit (Toolbox: Blank SEUCK) and SEUCK Redux framework

During the SEUCK Compo 2025, The New Dimension did not get around to submitting an entry for this competition. During the middle of August, I designed and created my very own Marauder inspired game creation using the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit. Then I fully transformed this game into a quality shoot 'em up using the SEUCK Redux and  the ACME cross-assembler. Although this game was created with the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit, it features a lot of non-SEUCK elements, which include a new front end complete with a high score table, background animation, power ups, artificial intelligence on some enemies (these aim for the player's position before firing). There is also a change in the level background colour scheme according to the level you are based on. This game is also available on the prize package.

Game instructions

This is a futuristic blaster for 1 player only.

Earth, into the future. Hostile aliens have entered our planet and have generated an energy crystal inside a vault which is inside the Hyper Hive at the base, Sector 4. The crystal is a huge threat to our planet because the aliens want to use its energy force to build a mega bomb and destroy us all and inhabit Earth instead of us!

Your mission is to guide your state-of-the-art hybrid jet powered ground vehicle through four different sectors and try to reach the vault inside the Hyper Hive inside Sector 4. You must then destroy the energy crystal to save the world from the threat of destruction. Unfortunately, your mission will not be that easy, because you will have to fight against alien defences, which a lot of those contain built-in Artificial Intelligence. These enemies will target you on sight and will attempt to destroy you while they can. To only way to defend yourself is by dodging their firepower, avoid contact with them and also fire your lasers at the defences to destroy them. There are also many obstacles in which your vehicle will encounter. These will simply stop you from moving. They are walls, buildings, bushes, water and other obstacles like that. At the end of each sector guards a huge guardian. To be able to destroy that guardian, you need to shoot it 15 times. Pick up pods for power ups they are as follows:

(S) - Temporary shield charge - This will activate an enegry shield around your vehicle (The vehicle will flash). It will give you protection against the alien forces. Warning! This power up will not last long, so you had better be quick.
(L) - Laser upgrade - This will increase the amount of lasers you can fire at a time before re-loading and firing the next laser. Warning! If you pick one of these up after carrying the power up that allows three lasers to be fired before reload, the lasers will overheat and revert back to firing one laser at a time.
(B) - Smart bomb - The power up will trigger a smart bomb, which will wipe out all the enemies and their bullets on sight. Hint: Make sure there are plenty of aliens and bullets before collecting this pod.

Extra lives are awarded every 10,000 points.

Can you make it into the Hyper Hive and save the world? We are counting on you!

Controls

Plug a joystick into port 2
Up / Down / Left / Right / Diagonal - Move vehicle direction accordingly

Fire - Blast lasers

Run Stop - Pause game
Q (When paused) - Abort game and return to the front end.

Have fun!

SCENARIO

The Master of Awesome, and his mentor the Master of Exposition, are heading for a breakdance competition. Not for money or glory, but to show off the physical feats of the School of Awesome as an example to the world. (And also because the alternative, spending a Saturday evening in the Temple of Awesome, was boring.)

Since they are running late and can't afford taxi or Uber, the Master of Awesome suggests they take a shortcut ... through the Ninja Zone.

THE NINJA ZONE! A (mostly peaceful) area of the city under complete ninja control. 4,000 extremely violent ninjas, dedicated to crime and stealthy murder, await anyone who tries to cross their turf. (They also carry an old grudge against the Temple of Awesome - see the original KUNG-FU MANIACS Trilogy.)

Thus begins the quest to reach the breakdancing competition in time. Will the School of Awesome's secret dance move - the Twerk of Destiny - save the day...?

HOW TO PLAY

This is a 1 or 2 player game. Press Fire on either joystick to start the game.

The second player can join in any time, by pressing Fire.

Joystick Port 2: Control the Master of Awesome
Joystick Port 1: Control the Master of Exposition

You earn a bonus life for every 10,000 points you score.

Press FIRE to strike. If you combine a strike with a jump, you can make various flying attacks.

The default direction of a strike is always Forward (from left to right). To strike backwards, hold LEFT while pressing Fire repeatedly.

Holding LEFT also makes your character do the Twerk of Destiny - which doubles as a way to Duck.

JUMPING

Press or hold UP to jump, and combine with LEFT/RIGHT to make a long jump.

The longer you hold LEFT or RIGHT, the longer the jump. You can change the direction of a jump - or break it - in mid-air.

If you keep holding UP, you will automatically jump again as soon as you land.

You can jump onto these objects - but only from the sides:
LEDGES, CRATES, STREET LAMPS, RAILS, TABLES, COUCHES, TREES, VANS and WALL PIPES.

IMPORTANT: If you find yourself "stuck" after you jump onto the very edge of an object, just keep holding UP to immediately make another jump and move on.

HINTS & TIPS

- The game rewards perseverance. Long jumps will often get easier on the second try. Climbing wall pipes becomes easier the more you experiment with it.
- You can choose to run past most of the objects you can jump onto ... but some of them will also block movements and jumps. (This may require some practice.)
- Of all the objects you can jump onto and navigate, wall pipes are the trickiest. Keep holding UP when you move along a wall pipe, and combine left/right movements to jump to a higher point.
- The Twerk of Destiny move (Hold LEFT) is an effective way to dodge throwing-star attacks, but requires good timing. If you find it too difficult for dodging projectiles, then try instead to hold UP to keep jumping about.
- During the dance competition, the more cool moves you make, the more bonus points you will score. (And the weaker your performance, the more disappointed the crowd reactions.)
- Collect Mystical Scrolls to gain extra bonus points. (Some of them will vanish if you don't collect them quickly enough.)
- When 2 players play at the same time, be aware that the one who runs "in front" may drag the other player along. Try to keep pace with each other.
- If you think you've got stuck inside a tree: Try moving left or right.
- Advanced players can pull off some very fancy jumping and climbing tricks. Practice makes awesome!

Instructions

You are Zintkala of the Lokota. She has lived as an outlaw since the massacre of her tribe by gold miners, ten years ago. Now she must return to defeat an evil Demon Serpent  Unk Cekula, reawakened by the reckless miners, whom her ancestors first slew in ages past.

Proceed left to right. Jump over obstacles. Avoid or shoot hazards and enemies. Try not to die. Are there any subtleties to this? Why, yes… Look out for the small flashing brown barrels, which contain valuable power ups. If your main weapon power level is at zero, the next barrel you collect will always raise that level to 1, unlocking your second pistol. Otherwise, it will grant one of three random bonuses: 1 – raise your main weapon power as far as level 3 (both pistols unlocked, rapid fire). 2 – an extra stick of dynamite, up to 4. 3 – an extra reserve life, up to 6. If the selected bonus is already maxed out, you will instead receive a protective shield that will last a little over ten seconds (effective against enemies and their shots but will not protect you if you fall into deep rapids). Along with the enemies you encounter, there are also animals that can be dangerous, but are not evil. Killing them, whether with pistols or dynamite, will displease the holy forces that have blessed your endeavour, and cause you to lose a level in weapon power. There are three stages to traverse before your fateful encounter with Unk Cekula, an evil Serpent Demon, each with its guardian:

1 – The Mining Town.
2 – The Badlands Express.
3 – The Black Hills.

SEUCK Version: The Shoot Em Up Construction Kit and SEUCK Redux
Author: Rodrigo Yeowtch

Musician (if any): Richard/TND
Enhancements (if any): None
Extras: SEUCK finished game state.

Instructions

SCENARIO

The game is a tribute to classic reggae.

In the woods of Kingston, Jamaica, a brotherhood of men and women decide to live according to a natural way of life – the Ital. Natural food, natural huts made of hay and palm branches, and the sacramental use of a fragrant, curious plant.
Everything is peaceful until one afternoon a police helicopter flies over their dwelling place, and soon a group of armed men in uniform invade their camp and confiscate all their herb.
Rastaman undergoes a journey to retrieve all the sacred plant he can find on his way, having to fight policemen using nothing but coconut shells.

PLAYING THE GAME

Using a joystick in either port, guide your hapless hero around the farms and defend yourself from the police, and the animals. You can only fire straight forward.

This game has been marked as orange because it was previously released as a demo, but the compo organizers have accepted it due to it not being a game previously.

For legal reasons, The New Dimension is not able to supply The Shoot Em Up Construction Kit to download for use of this competition, it will be up to you to search for these yourself. However, we are happy to provide links to SEUCK related web sites, which I think will give you ideas for a new game exclusively for this compo. Or perhaps you want to use any tools that are available to you here. Anyway, here are the links to the SEUCK related resources.

SEUCK RELATED TUTORIALS AND ARCHIVE RESOURCES

THE SEUCK VAULT
by Merman and various contributors

Merman/Scene World's web site dedicated to archiving mostly public domain game titles that were created/generated by SEUCK. Includes some exclusive games that were submitted to the web site. There are also a series of SEUCK enhancement tips to help enhance your games, including a few from myself.

SEUCK School
by Richard Bayliss and various contributors

TND's very own archive of SEUCK enhancement tips. Starting from packing and crunching, all the way to learning to make new front ends and adding full in game enhancements, etc using assembly and/or an aid of the Action Replay cartridge. Also includes SEUCK Redux tutorials.

SEUCK RELATED ENHANCEMENT TOOLS

The SEUCK Title Screen Maker
by Richard Bayliss

Create wonderful new presentable front ends with/without hi score tables, a custom font, bitmap logo and add music without the hassle of coding anything. Scripting Construction Kit
by 4Mat

A superb cross-dev Python based script that can modify your standalone Commodore 64 games created using the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit. This tool allows you to push the limitations of SEUCK even further the easiest way where possible. These include features such as adding smart aim to enemies, forcing enemies to follow/track down your player ship, create random/timed spawning enemies, sinus movements, program levels to run specific timed features, spawn new enemies from enemies instead of bullets, customise the score panel, adding character set animation and background properties and much more. Transform your SEUCK creation into a real masterpiece. (Requires Python V3.10 or possibly higher, and an optional  cross dev cruncher such as Exomizer V3.11, TSCrunch or Dali. The SCK framework comes with an example game demo, which showas the capabilities of what this excellent tool really can do. It is amazing what the limitations of this tool can give out. Full manual also included as well as tips on how to get started.

Warning: This tool will only work on standard vertical scrolling versions of SEUCK and will not work on the horizontal scrolling build. Also games developed with this tool will currently only work on PAL C64s.

KICK Assembler SEUCK Framework
by Richard Bayliss

A full framework, which is highly useful for enhancing standalone SEUCK games. The framework has been made as easy where possible, but there is still programming knowedge required in order to put things together. Part of the SEUCK School project. The framework requires Kick Assembler, Charpad V2.7.6 (or higher) and a cruncher like Exomizer, TSCrunch or Dali.

SEUCK Buster V2.0
By Richard Bayliss

The latest utility that allows you to add optional title and in game music to your own front end or in game music on your SEUCK or Sideways SEUCK game creation. Also includes an optional classic SCR packer for compressing your SEUCK titles with. Full instructions/note file are provided on the D64.

Tape Master Pro
By Richard Bayliss and Martin Piper

Are your a SEUCK/Games developer? Do you have fond memories of the classic tape loading era, for example the Ocean Loader, and other similar tape loaders? Would you like to relive those good old tape loading days? If so, then Tape Master Pro really can do this job for you. This tool consists of a wide range of options that allow you to customise your tape loader system inlcuding loading text editor, scroll text, loading bars and even options for use of open borders and music fade out (music player compatibility permitted). You don't need to code anything, all you need is some music (relocated at $e000 which use zero pages above $ef), and a loading bitmap in OCP Art Studio or Koala Paint Format. Then let your dream loader come to life.
