What is SEUCK?
SEUCK = Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit

SEUCK is an acronym for the "Shoot Em Up Construction Kit". SEUCK is an old commercial C64 utility that allows you to create and generate your very own shoot 'em ups or other game ideas with the aid of various sub menus pre-built into the program itself. I first had SEUCK in 1990 with my first ever Commodore 64 computer and loved using it since. SEUCK was an all-in-one tool ideal for designing and creating your very own vertical scrolling shoot 'em ups, without requiring any knowledge of code.

Constructing your game can be done by using a set of menus. sprites, objects, background graphics, sound effects (music requires additional custom code), attack waves, player limitations, level settings, play test. SEUCK even has its own disk or tape mastering system. The tape version had its own auto boot tape with built in SEUCK fast loader tape system. Out of many games creation editors, SEUCK is by far the most easiest games creator for the Commodore 64. It is also a whole lot of fun too.

Although you can make fun games with SEUCK. The editor also has its own limitations about what you can or can't do to build your own game. Common pitfalls, are the game engine is very limited or restricted with the number of units available for attack patterns. On the plus side, it is possible to implement clever tricks using the attack waves. For example a boss sprite is formed of linked enemies and will not explode as a whole set after 15 shots. The down side it it is that you will have to kill a boss by shooting each sprite separately. There's also the waiting time for a level to complete after shooting a boss clean. As well as basic game play, SEUCK can also churn out some quality games productions that really outsmart the SEUCK engine even without programming. Below you can see the result of a classic SEUCK compo entry called "Border Blast 3" by Alf Yngve.

There is also the Sideways Scrolling SEUCK Left V3 by Jon Wells. A superb horizontal scrolling version of the original Shoot Em Up Construction Kit which ironically scrolls from the left of the screen. The sideways scrolling version was made back in 2008. Below you can see a result of a great Sideways Left-Right scrolling SEUCK game. The Hunter, by Errazking. This game was made as a tribute to my very own amazing Sub Hunter.

In 2024 Martin Piper modified the Sideways SEUCK Left engine to scroll the correct direction from the right of the screen. In the last competition, there were two games which used this version of the Sideways scrolling SEUCK. Thunderbird (pictured below) and 4,000 Kung Fu Maniacs.

Please note that this compo is not able to provide the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit or any of the Sideways Scrolling SEUCK engines, it will be up to you to find the utility. If you own the original disk or tape version of the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit, then this is a bonus for you.

What about the SEUCK Compo?

The C64 SEUCK Compo was first launched by Akira, at shmups.com, but eventually passed the gauntlet to TND to host the compo. Since 2009, the C64 SEUCK Compo has been quite successful and it has been continuing (with breaks between) through to 2021, with a three year break afterwards. Now with me coming out of retirement from hosting the competition, it came back by popular demand in early 2025. Now, to mark the 30th Anniversary of Richard/TND's first ever actual C64 game release, it has been decided that a new competition (SEUCK Compo 2025 - Part 2) has been launched.

The aim of the C64 SEUCK Compo 2025 is to develop a fully playable game, with aid of using the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit, Sideways Scrolling SEUCK Left, or Sideways Scrolling SEUCK Right. The objective is to make any kind of game genre that you think might stand out in front of the crowd. Your game should have at least one pickup object or have 10,000 points for extra lives enabled. This feature can be reserved for specific in game enhancements such as power ups.

Anyway here is what is what is recommended from your compo entries (although it is not compulsory):

1. Presentation and design (optional)

Your front end presentation should at least contain a logo, rather than a full page with just plain text - I'm not saying it has to be that way, but that is what is preferred. SEUCK's front end can be very restrictive for designing and creating your very own front end. To create a logo, you can use the character editor in the title screen editor to create chars that form a logo. The easiest way would be to use characters that you do not require (using the Edit Character Set option in the EDIT FRONT END options in the main menu of SEUCK. Then you can manually construct the logo in the front end editor. You might want to use the Action Replay Machine Code monitor to change the rolling bar colours if there are colours that you don't want. You may use SEUCK School enhancement Action Replay tips to change colours if you want to, but that is entirely up to you.

There are two good examples for logos below: Tau Zero by Alf Yngve, and Cycotics by Carl Mason.

You are also welcome to use additional tools such as my SEUCK Title Screen Maker and make something presentable like a couple of my examples below like I did with Ceti 22 and Nyaaaah! The Resurrection:

That is only if you wish to use those, but bear in mind that enhancements are the main prize for the winner's compo entry and it does not involve using the SEUCK Title Screen Maker.

2. Good quality game design and originality

Game content should stand out well. There should be nice graphics, and the sprites should be clear to see when playing your game. Graphics should have some time spent on them. Rendering PC made graphics/models of your own, then converting those to C64 is one good option - providing that it is not AI generated. Exploring other background and sprite graphics can be quite helpful as well. Re-Alienator uses a clever example of creating an Operation Wolf style game with a difference. It's highly playable and good fun and makes a good Aliens themed game. Adventures of Alain is a good example that SEUCK is not just made for making shoot 'em ups. You can also make interesting comedy movie-style games. There are plenty of other games spread around on previous compos or on the TND contributor's page that may give you some ideas.

3. We want to see good shoot 'em ups or if you have any more great ideas

We do love space blasters, but most space blasters that have been entered in the C64 SEUCK Compo do not seem to do very well with the audience. It is always great to blend in some cool enemy attack waves. Synergy by Alan Simek had some lovely graphics, and smooth animations. The Last Hope by Sea Software featured some Gradius style alien patterns which stands out pretty well in a well polished shoot 'em up.

We had many different SEUCK compo entries that involved being a vertical scrolling space shoot 'em up, but only two or three of those did extremely well in previous competitions.

Sheer Earth Attack was one of the winners of the SEUCK Compo 2013.

Guilotine - The Doom Machine reached third place in the 2020 SEUCK Compo. Okay, okay, so it was one of my games, but it did go extremely well amomgst the audience.

Enhancements and are welcome but not essential

The C64 SEUCK Compo 2025 is not only open to SEUCK game developers who cannot code, but also it is open to programmers who like to enhance their own or friends unreleased SEUCK creations. You are welcome to add some enhancements from the SEUCK School tips (or some of your own ideas) into your games. You are allowed to add as many enhancements as you like, use the KickAssembler, SEUCK Redux framework or do whatever you like to the game to make it stand out. However, you must prove that the game was made in SEUCK. This can be done by sending the SEUCK All Data file or raw version of the game along with the enhanced version. You can use Scripting Construction Kit for your games if you wish to.

Ray Fish DX used SEUCK Redux as a little collaboration project outside the SEUCK Compo.

In the last compo, the winner was Alf Yngve with Star Skimmer. This game won full game enhancements, which include a loading bitmap, a new title screen featuring hi score table and also full overhaul of in game enhancements.

The winner's game will get full enhancements as a prize and will be passed to them first before the traditional compo prize pack has been launched on D64 on the TND SEUCK Compo 2025 - Part 2 page before appearing in the SEUCK Prize Package which will be free to download from TND. Two runner ups at the end of the competition results will win receive a new front end for their creation. The prize pack will be developed during Winter 2026.

Depending on the type of game's compatibility, The prize version of the game will be tested on SEUCK Redux (If suitable) and showed to the winner - if suitable the platform, SEUCK Redux will be used. Otherwise the prize will be on the standard SEUCK game engine with additional enhancements hand coded by Richard/TND. Either way this will include:

- Front end presentation with author's credits and music

The prize version of game will be respectably submitted to the game author before including as a release with all entries submitted in the SEUCK
compo 2025-Part 2 prize package.

Scenario

Dr. Commodore is needed in the operating room!

The patient has a severe case of gallstones. We need to surgically remove his gallbladder as soon as possible, but we cannot operate until the patient's condition has stabilized.

So as an emergency measure, you must put an ultrasound cannon against the stomach of the patient, and pulverize the gallstones inside his gallbladder. If you fail, we may lose the patient...

How to play

This is a 1 player game. Press Fire on either joystick to start the game.

On the screen you will see a live ultrasound scan of the patient's inflamed, swollen gallbladder.
(His face is shown in an insert on the right.)
The scan will also show gallstones as they form and move about inside the patient.
Aim with the crosshairs, and press FIRE to shoot.

The Status Panel shows the following information:

- Patient ECG (Electrocardiogram): The jagged line that indicates the patient's overall health. The more gallstones you shoot, the more the ECG is affected.
- Gallstone Health: The white dots that indicate the state of the patient's gallbladder. If the number of dots reaches zero, the gallbladder ruptures and we lose the patient.
- Ultrasound Cannon Charge: The red digits that indicate how many "shots" you currently have. This will recharge every hour, but you still have a limited number of shots for each level - so be careful not to waste them!
- In the upper left corner is a clock that indicates the number of hours elapsed. Each time the clock changes hour, your ultrasound cannon recharges.

If you are too slow to destroy gallstones, they will begin to cause damage to the patient. (You can see his reaction in the insert.) The more stones that gather in the gallbladder, the worse the damage can get. If the patient dies, the game ends.

You earn a bonus life for every 10,000 points you score (indicated in the ECG activity).

Hints and tips

- The colour of a gallstone may indicate how dangerous it is.
(Hint: It's not just the big ones you should shoot first!)

- Some gallstones will pass without damaging the patient, but you can earn vital bonus points (and bonus lives) by shooting them anyway.

- You can pulverize an entire cluster of gallstones with one shot, if they are closely packed. Practice this to make the "ammo" last longer.

This game can also be played with both robots at the same time, because it was designed for single player and two players at the same time.

(With both joysticks connected in Port 1 and 2)

Movements: 8-way joystick lever Fire button to fire Player 1 (direct fire)
Player 2 (directional fire) Movement: With push scroll.

Move your character by moving the lever of your joystick connected to port 1 or 2 in 8 directions (North, South, East, West, N-East, N-West, S-East and S-West) and use the Fire button to fire your weapon.

However, there is a peculiarity in Space Hacked......If you play in door 2 with Player 1 you have the weapon available that will fire in direct forward mode and if you play with Player 2 in door 1 you will have the weapons available that will fire in directional mode. On the title screen you can decide which robot you want to start playing with (robot1 or robot2), by connecting the joystick to port 1 or 2, or port 1 and 2 by pressing the Fire button successively with two joysticks connected (port1 and 2).

Use the [Run/stop] key to pause ⏸ your game and to reset the score or abort the game use the [P] key on the C64 keyboard (or PC if you are using an emulator). If you use a C64 emulator use the Esc key for Run/stop and the P key (reset/Abort game). Gameplay (Tips) In the game you will have to challenge the various enemy robots that you will encounter along the way which will spawn at various pre-established points, be careful of the system's special weapons which will shoot fireballs in every direction, be careful of the various passages.

Collect as many bonus points as you can which will allow you to reach 10,000 points on the score table for the gift of "an Extra life".

Attention ⚠ Along the way there are several traps and therefore I strongly recommend that you do not touch the walls of the maze and the objects that you will find in front of you, because they can cause you to lose precious lives that will be needed to reach your main objective, the final level and the Big Boss (Oxyd-X) who will block your way. Defeat the final Boss and reach the exit…Don't forget to collect the final bonus points.

I wish you good luck commander.

For legal reasons, The New Dimension is not able to supply The Shoot Em Up Construction Kit to download for use of this competition, it will be up to you to search for these yourself. However, we are happy to provide links to SEUCK related web sites, which I think will give you ideas for a new game exclusively for this compo. Or perhaps you want to use any tools that are available to you here. Anyway, here are the links to the SEUCK related resources.

SEUCK RELATED TUTORIALS AND ARCHIVE RESOURCES

THE SEUCK VAULT
by Merman and various contributors

Merman/Scene World's web site dedicated to archiving mostly public domain game titles that were created/generated by SEUCK. Includes some exclusive games that were submitted to the web site. There are also a series of SEUCK enhancement tips to help enhance your games, including a few from myself.

SEUCK School
by Richard Bayliss and various contributors

TND's very own archive of SEUCK enhancement tips. Starting from packing and crunching, all the way to learning to make new front ends and adding full in game enhancements, etc using assembly and/or an aid of the Action Replay cartridge. Also includes SEUCK Redux tutorials.

SEUCK RELATED ENHANCEMENT TOOLS

The SEUCK Title Screen Maker
by Richard Bayliss

Create wonderful new presentable front ends with/without hi score tables, a custom font, bitmap logo and add music without the hassle of coding anything. Then use the Action Replay/Retro Replay (or VICE) M/C monitor to link your title screen to your finished SEUCK game. The project comes complete with a user manual to help you get started.

Scripting Construction Kit
by 4Mat

A superb cross-dev Python based script that can modify your standalone Commodore 64 games created using the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit. This tool allows you to push the limitations of SEUCK even further the easiest way where possible. These include features such as adding smart aim to enemies, forcing enemies to follow/track down your player ship, create random/timed spawning enemies, sinus movements, program levels to run specific timed features, spawn new enemies from enemies instead of bullets, customise the score panel, adding character set animation and background properties and much more. Transform your SEUCK creation into a real masterpiece. (Requires Python V3.10 or possibly higher, and an optional  cross dev cruncher such as Exomizer V3.11, Tinycrunch, TSCrunch or Dali. The SCK framework comes with an example game demo, which showas the capabilities of what this excellent tool really can do. It is amazing what the limitations of this tool can give out. Full manual also included as well as tips on how to get started.

Warning: This tool will only work on standard vertical scrolling versions of SEUCK and will not work on the horizontal scrolling build. Also games developed with this tool will currently only work on PAL C64s.

KICK Assembler SEUCK Framework
by Richard Bayliss

A full framework, which is highly useful for enhancing standalone SEUCK games. The framework has been made as easy where possible, but there is still programming knowedge required in order to put things together. Part of the SEUCK School project. The framework requires Kick Assembler, Charpad V2.7.6 (or higher) and a cruncher like Exomizer, TSCrunch or Dali.

SEUCK Buster V2.0
By Richard Bayliss

The latest utility that allows you to add optional title and in game music to your own front end or in game music on your SEUCK or Sideways SEUCK game creation. Also includes an optional classic SCR packer for compressing your SEUCK titles with. Full instructions/note file are provided on the D64.

Tape Master Pro
By Richard Bayliss and Martin Piper

Are your a SEUCK/Games developer? Do you have fond memories of the classic tape loading era, for example the Ocean Loader, and other similar tape loaders? Would you like to relive those good old tape loading days? If so, then Tape Master Pro really can do this job for you. This tool consists of a wide range of options that allow you to customise your tape loader system inlcuding loading text editor, scroll text, loading bars and even options for use of open borders and music fade out (music player compatibility permitted). You don't need to code anything, all you need is some music (relocated at $e000 which use zero pages above $ef), and a loading bitmap in OCP Art Studio or Koala Paint Format. Then let your dream loader come to life.
